George Chilvers from Ipswich, is preparing to take on the London Marathon this month, inspired by his father’s cancer journey and the care his family has received from local hospital teams.

George, who comes from a well-known local farming family, is using the 26.2-mile challenge to raise funds for Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, supporting the services that have helped his dad throughout his stage 4 lung cancer treatment.

Seeing his father face cancer with strength and resilience has been a powerful motivator for George, who says the experience has brought their family and community even closer together.

Right from the very start Dad made it clear he wasn’t dying of cancer, he was living with cancer, and that’s exactly what he has done. Watching my dad go through cancer has been incredibly tough, but also inspiring. The care he’s received has meant so much to all of us as a family. Doing the London Marathon feels like a way to give something back and support others going through similar experiences.”

Despite picking up an injury during training, George is determined to still complete the challenge. He now plans to walk and jog sections of the marathon and will be doing so dressed as Elsa from Frozen, adding a light-hearted and memorable twist to his fundraising efforts.

With strong ties to the local community, George has been supported by his parents, Ian and Alyson Chilvers, family and friends, all rallying behind him as he takes on one of the world’s most iconic marathons.

Funds raised will support Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity in enhancing care for patients and families across local hospitals, helping provide vital support beyond what the NHS can fund alone.

Fundraising Manager Sandra Gosney said, “George’s story is a powerful reminder of how cancer impacts not just individuals, but entire families and communities. It’s incredibly inspiring to see him turn that experience into something so positive by taking on the London Marathon in support of the teams who have cared for his dad. We’re so grateful for his support and wish him every success on race day.”
