We are pleased to announce the opening of a new dedicated pharmacy dispensary at Ipswich Hospital, created to improve the experience for patients receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and haematology treatments.

Located in the Woolverstone Centre, this new dispensary provides a quieter, more convenient service for patients who often require frequent prescriptions as part of their treatment. By being separate from the hospital’s main pharmacy in Central Outpatients, it helps to reduce waiting times and ease pressure on patients during what can already be a stressful time.

The Woolverstone Dispensary has been funded by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, whose support has made it possible to create a space dedicated entirely to the needs of cancer patients.

Faster access to medication
Prescriptions written for patients who are waiting to collect their medication will have a minimum turnaround time of 30 minutes, from the point the pharmacy is informed that the patient is waiting or when the patient arrives at the Woolverstone Pharmacy to let staff know they are waiting.
Controlled drug prescriptions will continue to be dispensed by the main hospital pharmacy. However, once dispensed, these medications can be transported to the Woolverstone Dispensary for collection if patients request this.
MyChart notifications
Patients can also benefit from MyChart, our patient app, which allows them to receive messages when their medication is ready to collect. This helps save time and reduces the uncertainty and stress associated with waiting for prescriptions.
Opening times and who the dispensary supports
The Woolverstone Dispensary opening times are:
  • Monday to Friday:
    9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm
The dispensary provides medication for:
  • Oncology outpatients
  • Haematology outpatients
  • Radiotherapy outpatients
  • Patients collecting prescriptions even if they are not attending the Wolverstone Day Unit (WLDU).
Collecting prescriptions outside opening hours
If patients arrive outside Woolverstone Dispensary opening hours, the following options are available:

Weekday evenings (4pm to 6pm)
  • Prescriptions can be arranged in advance to be collected from WLDU. Items can be dropped to WLDU at 4pm and stored for collection from WLDU staff.
  • If the medication is not urgently needed, patients can collect it from the Woolverstone Dispensary on another day during opening hours.
  • If the medication is urgently needed, patients should go to the Ipswich main outpatient pharmacy, where items can be dispensed while waiting or, if possible, collected later from the Woolverstone Dispensary.
Weekends (9am to 4pm)
  • If the medication is not urgently needed, patients should collect it from the Woolverstone Dispensary during weekday opening hours.
  • If the medication is urgently needed, patients should go to the Ipswich main outpatient pharmacy to arrange dispensing while waiting or collection from the Woolverstone Dispensary if possible.

We would like to say a big thank you to our supporters, whose donations have made this new service possible, and to the pharmacy and clinical teams who have worked hard to bring the Woolverstone Dispensary to life.
This new facility is an important step forward in improving care, comfort and convenience for our cancer patients, and we are proud to be able to offer this enhanced service at Ipswich Hospital.
