New e-Bike at Colchester Hospital transforms heart care for local patients Thanks to the generosity of supporters of Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, a new state-of-the-art electronic bike (e-Bike) has been funded for Colchester Hospital’s cardiology team. The specialist equipment provides a safer, more natural way of carrying out stress echocardiograms – vital tests that help doctors diagnose and manage heart conditions. Until now, many patients in North East Essex could only undergo the test using medication to increase their heart rate, which is not always suitable or well-tolerated. The new e-Bike enables doctors to assess heart function while patients exercise gently, offering a healthier and more accurate alternative. One of the first patients to benefit was Mustafa Vurulmaz from Clacton, who felt “reassured” knowing the equipment was available after he was referred because of worrying symptoms. Dr Parisiadou, consultant cardiologist at Colchester Hospital, explained the significance of the new equipment, “This technology is widely used internationally and is a more natural way to stress the heart. It provides better recovery for patients and is especially the best option for younger people. Having this at Colchester means we can offer our patients the very best care, closer to home.” The e-Bike has been installed thanks to a £37,000 investment from Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity. James Stephens, the charity’s senior grants manager said, “We were thrilled to be able to fund this vital piece of equipment and extremely thankful to our supporters for making this possible. This equipment means patients now have an effective alternative and it’s already making a real difference.” Manage Cookie Preferences
