The much-loved Hospital Hero Hike made a triumphant return on Saturday 4 October 2025, with around 100 participants lacing up their boots to take on the 21-mile challenge from Colchester Hospital to Ipswich Hospital.
Despite blustery winds and rain, walkers showed incredible determination and community spirit, raising an impressive £20,000 in support of patients and staff across East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
The event, organised by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, saw participants trek through the stunning East Anglian countryside, with every step helping to support vital services, including the Butterfly Service, and appeals close to the walker’s hearts.
Among those taking part was Caroline Dow [Below - Right and Mary Wright Left], a Butterfly Volunteer at Ipswich Hospital, who supports families and patients receiving end-of-life care by offering comfort, company and compassion.
Caroline said, “After months of training, I was thrilled to complete the hike alongside my good friend Mary. It was very challenging but very enjoyable and the support along the way meant a great deal to us.”
"I don’t like to think of anyone being on their own at the end of their lives and I also know how hard it can be for a patient’s family or loved ones. I am so thankful to my friends and family for their support and helping me to raise so far over £1,600.”
Gavin Lamb, Corporate & Trusts Fundraising Manager for the charity said: “We are so proud of everyone who braved the weather and completed this year’s Hospital Hero Hike. Their determination and generosity will have a lasting impact on our hospitals, staff and patients. We would like to say a big thank you to all who walked, donated, volunteered and supported this fantastic event.”
