A Joint Charity Effort Brings Comfort and Dignity to Radiotherapy Patients Thanks to the generosity of The Jude Brady Foundation and Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, patients undergoing radiotherapy for breast, oesophageal and lung cancers at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust are now benefiting from a new set of specially designed treatment gowns. In total, 140 new radiotherapy gowns have been purchased, 70 funded by The Jude Brady Foundation and 70 by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity. These bespoke gowns are already in daily use and have been warmly received by both patients and staff. Rachel Laker, radiotherapy services manager shared, “A big thank you for this charitable donation of treatment gowns for our patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. Having the gowns means our patients can remain covered whilst getting into position for radiotherapy. “The bespoke design allows for minimal exposure of the skin and protects our patients’ modesty and dignity. We have worked with the manufacturer to create seven different sizes to suit all body types and in a range of colours which can be used for any gender” During radiotherapy, patients are often required to expose their chest area so that treatment can be accurately delivered. These new gowns feature poppers along the sides and shoulders, allowing radiographers to uncover only the area being treated while keeping the rest of the body covered. This small but meaningful improvement ensures that patients can maintain their dignity and comfort throughout their treatment. The previous gowns in use had become worn and did not adequately cater for all sizes. The new gowns, produced in seven numbered sizes (rather than small, medium, large, etc.), help patients feel more comfortable and less self-conscious. Each gown is also embroidered with the radiotherapy department’s name, giving a professional appearance and a sense of identity for both patients and staff. The total cost of the gowns was £2,982, fully funded through this joint charitable effort. This collaboration demonstrates how local charities and hospital supporters continue to make a tangible difference to patient care, not just through advanced equipment, but also through the small details that enhance comfort, dignity, and wellbeing every day. “We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our local charities,” added Rachel. “These gowns might seem like a small thing, but they make a big difference to how our patients feel during what can be a very difficult time.” Find out more about the difference your donations make, by clicking the link below.
